Undergraduate research opportunity in scientific software development

The Mullins Lab in the Department of Microbiology has an opportunity for an undergraduate student to join as a software development and data analysis intern.

Under the supervision of Dr. Mullins' scientific programming team, the student will:

  • contribute to laboratory management software in production use by lab members and collaborators;
  • develop database queries and reproducible analyses of laboratory data in response to investigator queries;
  • collect feedback and present progress to lab researchers in one-on-one and presentation settings.

The Mullins Lab software team consists of experienced professional software developers. The student developer will have an unusual opportunity to learn and improve software engineering skills in an active biomedical research lab.

We strongly encourage applications from students in the life sciences with some computer programming experience, as well as experienced programmers with some familiarity with cell or molecular biology. We are particularly interested in applicants interested in working in the lab for several academic (and possibly summer) quarters if the first quarter is successful.

We expect a successful applicant to have experience with some (but certainly not all) of the following tools and techniques:

  • a high-level programming language, such as Java, Python, Ruby, Perl, or JavaScript
  • a relational database system, such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, or SQL Server
  • software version control, such Subversion, Git, or Mercurial
  • data analysis using programmable (R, Python, SAS…) or graphical (Excel, GraphPad Prism…) tools
  • interactive web development using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript

To apply for Spring 2017, email Evan Silberman, Scientific Programmer, at silby@uw.edu with a resume and a brief self-introduction, describing your experience and interest in the position.
